Reassure Me: Is the UK Leading on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
Reassure me that the UK isn’t just following the crowd.
Reassure me that we are a nation with the courage to do what’s right, even when it’s not easy. That we’ve learnt from the mistakes of the past and are building a future where everyone—regardless of race, background, or identity—can achieve their full potential without barriers.
This is the vision I’m holding onto. It’s what I’m working towards every single day. But I have to admit, I’m shaken. And I’m not alone.
Many of us—particularly those from the global majority—are wondering if the UK is ready to truly lead when it comes to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The noise from across the pond, from those loud voices in the US (you know the ones I mean 👀), is growing louder and louder. Their resistance to DEI efforts is not only alarming, but it’s also fuelling fear that the UK might abandon its own path in favour of easier, safer options.
So, here’s the question: will the UK choose to lead on DEI in a meaningful way? Or will we fall into the trap of performative gestures?
Will organisations shy away from the difficult but necessary conversations about race, ethnicity, and privilege, instead pivoting towards the more “palatable” topics of class and gender? Will we prioritise comfort over progress?
I hope not. Because this work matters. It’s not just about ticking boxes or meeting quotas. It’s about creating spaces where everyone belongs. It’s about dismantling systemic barriers and ensuring that our workplaces, communities, and institutions reflect the richness of the people who live and work in them.
As leaders, we have a choice to make. Will we take the easy road, or will we stand firm and commit to the work of real, transformative inclusion?
If you’re a leader, here’s my challenge to you:
How are you creating real change in your organisation?
Are you fostering conversations that challenge the status quo, even when they’re uncomfortable?
What tangible actions are you taking to ensure that your commitment to DEI is more than just words?
This is not the time to follow. This is the time to lead.
The UK has the potential to be a global leader in inclusion and equity, but it requires all of us. Individuals, organisations, and communities, to step up and do the work.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. What commitments are you making as a leader in your organisation? What’s working for you? What challenges are you facing? Let’s learn from each other, support each other, and hold each other accountable.
Because the time for real leadership is now.
Let’s lead the way. Together.
